The Legend and History of Khatu Shyam Ji Temple, Rajasthan
According to Hindu mythology, Barbarika was known for his unparalleled prowess before the great battle of Mahabharata. His decision to support the weaker side, in an effort to maintain fairness, would have led to the destruction of both sides, leaving him as the only survivor. To prevent this outcome, Lord Krishna sought a unique sacrifice from Barbarika — his head (Sheesh Daan). Barbarika willingly agreed, demonstrating his unwavering devotion. Pleased by this act of selflessness, Lord Krishna granted him a boon, declaring that in the Kaliyug (present times), Barbarika would be worshipped as Shyam Ji, bearing Krishna’s own name, and revered in his divine form.
