So, let’s find out when the Lakkhi Mela and Khatu Shyam’s birth anniversary will take place in the year 2024.
Lakkhi fair is held in Falgun : Apart from this, the main fair of Baba Khatushyam Ji is held in Falgun (March). The principal day of this fair is Ekadashi of Shukla Paksha in the Falgun month. This vibrant fair spans approximately 8 days, from Shashthi to Dwadashi. During this time, lakhs of devotees from all over the country come to worship Baba Shri Khatushyam. Some devotees stay until Holi, and after celebrating Holi with Baba Shyam, they return to their homes.
This year, the fair will be held from March 12 to March 21, with the main Lakkhi fair of Baba Shyam taking place on March 20. This time, the Lakkhi fair will extend for 10 days. There is a mythological story behind the Lakkhi fair being held every year in the month of Falgun. According to religious texts, on the Dwadashi date of the month of Falgun, Bhima’s grandson and Ghatotkach’s son Barbarik cut off his head and placed it at Lord Krishna’s feet upon his request. Thus, the Lakkhi fair continues until the Dwadashi date of the month of Falgun.
Are there any specific traditions or rituals that you particularly enjoy during the Lakkhi fair?
According to the scriptures, Khatu Shyam is linked to the Mahabharata period. He was the grandson of Bhima, the son of Pandu. Known for his immense strength, Bhima met Hidimba while the Pandavas were wandering from forest to forest to save their lives. Together, Bhima and Hidimba had a son named Ghatotkach, who later had a son named Barbarik. Over time, Barbarik came to be known as Khatu Shyam.
क्या है पौराणिक कथा?
Barbarik sought permission from Shri Krishna to participate in the war of Mahabharata. Knowing the outcome of the war, Shri Krishna devised a way to prevent Barbarik’s involvement by asking for his head as a donation. Without hesitation, Barbarik offered his head. Impressed by this great sacrifice, Shri Krishna granted him a boon: in Kaliyug, Barbarik would be known as Shyam. Shri Krishna proclaimed that Shyam would be the support of the defeated and that whoever came to his court would never leave empty-handed. After the war, the place where Shri Krishna kept Barbarik’s head became known as Khatu (in the present Sikar district of Rajasthan). Thus, Barbarik came to be called and worshipped as Khatu Shyam Baba.
